Reviews
"As he's proven in such Coen Brothers scores as Fargo and
Barton Fink, Burwell is a master of the absurd, using off-kilter instrumentations
and string-heavy orchestrations to make ironic commentaries on his often absurd
subjects. Without resorting to high-tech musical cliches, Burwell's music for
Simone has
a neat, futuristic edge. Not only do you hear the clicks and whirrs going in
the creation of the cgi supermodel, but Burwell's frantic percussion also lets
you hear the crazed mind of her creator. From tangos to Jamaican riffs, Burwell
pulls off a madcap comedy of stylistic choices that's never 'funny' music
as such, but wry and ingenious, with a particularly beautiful and haunting theme
for its heroine who never was." - Daniel Schweiger, Venice Magazine, October, 2002.
